The city of Niterói is within the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro and approximately 20 km from it. Niterói and Rio are connected by road and ferry. The connection by road is via the famous Rio-Niterói bridge, whose extension (not counting the entrance ramps) is about 13 km. The connection by ferry is provided by the company Barcas S.A., with one terminal in the center of Rio de Janeiro (in Praça XV de Novembro) and two terminals in Niterói, one in the center of the city (closer to the University) and the other in the neighborhood of Charitas (a project of the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer).
Traffic by both road and ferry from Rio to Niterói is frequently congested between 6:00 and 8:00 pm on weekdays, but at other hours usually there are no problems; and from Niterói to Rio it is very congested between 7:00 and 9:30 am on weekdays. Conference participants who want to be accommodated in Rio are advised to use the ferry to come to the conference venue. The ferry takes 20 minutes from the terminal in Rio to the terminal in the center of Niterói and 25 minutes to the Charitas terminal. To get from the ferry terminal in the center of Niterói to the conference venue, one can take a taxi or bus (line 47, 47A, 47B or 60). The bus terminal is located between the ferry terminal and the shopping center ‘Plaza Shopping’. It may be possible to organize a regular system of transportation at the times of arrival and departure, but for this to happen the organizers need to be informed about the plans of those who will be accommodated in Rio.
