The NIEP-Marx Collection

The NIEP-Marx Collection intends to publish the production of the researches associated to the group and/or classics of Marxism. It is edited in Brazil by Editora Consequência and is just available in Portuguese.

More than passive readers, the NIEP-Marx Collection hopes to find active interlocutors for a common project of theoretical and political criticism of capitalist society and the collective construction of alternatives, also theoretical and political, that allow us to go beyond this “miserable foundation” – the “theft of other people’s labor time” – which sustains the world of commodities in which we live.

CULTURE AGAINST BARBARISM | NIEP-Marx Collection, Volume VII
CULTURA CONTRA A BARBÁRIE | Coleção NIEP-Marx, Volume VII

Coleção NIEP-Marx, Volume VII

SYNOPSIS

“In times of ‘cultural war’, ultra-reactionary and even fascist ideological formulations mobilize their hordes against a grotesquely constructed ‘cultural Marxism’, which is sneakily dominating the media, educational systems and artistic manifestations. This book can be seen as an affirmative answer: yes, there is a cultural and artistic production and an awareness of social relations that resolutely aims to overcome the material contradictions that limit the emancipatory and emancipated representations of human life. And there is a whole accumulation of reflections on why these emancipatory representations are still very far from dominating cultural production, as propagated by the heralds of reaction. Yet…” Marcelo Badaró Mattos

SYNOPSIS

Written by lecturers who for decades have been discussing Marx and his most important book, this work resumes more than a century and a half of debates on Capital, but goes further and adds some relevant and original contributions to this long debate. Thus, both the reader who wants to start the systematic study of Marx’s work and the academic expert, more experienced in this reading, will benefit greatly from this book. Here there will be no shortage of thought-provoking interpretations of the theory of value, understood as “ultimately, a theory about capitalism“. Marcelo Badaró Mattos

UNEVEN DEVELOPMENT AND WORLD MARKET IN MARX | NIEP-Marx Collection, Volume V
DESENVOVIMENTO DESIGUAL E MERCADO MUNDIAL EM MARX | Coleção NIEP-Marx, Volume V

Author: Flávio Miranda

Colecao Vol_V

SYNOPSIS

“Departing from a deep study of the category of world market in Marx, in distinct moments of his intellectual path, this book allows us to reconstruct Marx’s theory of value (capitalism) in all its complexity and rigour. At the same time, the book doesn’t escape from the debates implied by such questions. As the different international insertions in the division of labour of distinct economies and regions is something inherent to the world dynamics of capitalism, this book is mandatory for those who want to explain, in critical and rigorous way, and transform the concrete reality of the world economy, still capitalist”. Marcelo Dias Carcanholo

AUTHOR

Flávio Miranda lectures Political Economy at the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro. He is PhD in Economics at UFF and researcher of the Interdisciplinary Center for Studies and Research on Marx and Marxism (NIEP-Marx).

SYNOPSIS

The book presents “a penetrating radiography of the general logic that governs capitalist global accumulation, responsible, in its reasoning, for the worsening of the climatic question. Before making this point, though, it passes through the entangled arguments most frequently presented by the economic establishment to deal with the problem: the repeated appeal to energy efficiency, to mitigation of CO2 emissions, to environmental consciousness etc. It is just after overcoming all this that Sá Barreto eloquently shows that the needs of capital expansion – ‘value that valorises itself’, in Marx’s formulation – are the causal kernel responsible for the increasing environmental deterioration.” Maurício Vieira Martins

AUTHOR

Eduardo Sá Barreto is PhD in Economics, lecturer at the Faculty of Economics of the Universidade Federal Fluminense and member of the Interdisciplinary Center for Studies and Research on Marx and Marxism (NIEP-Marx). His research concentrates on the themes of environmental crisis and capitalist structural crisis, having published several papers in this areas. Due to the fast deterioration of the material conditions to maintain life in the planet, he is particularly interested in demonstrating that overcoming capitalist society is not only desirable and necessary, but also urgent.

MARX, ESPINOSA AND DARWIN: Thinkers of immanence | NIEP-Marx Collection, Volume III - 2nd edition
MARX, ESPINOSA E DARWIN | Coleção NIEP-Marx, Volume III - 2ª edição

Author: Maurício Vieira Martins

SYNOPSIS

The book reflects years of a research theoretically rigorous and politically committed. For Marxists, the book offers a chance to have a more broad knowledge into the philosophy of Spinoza and Darwin. For all readers, the work is a unique opportunity to attests that serious academic research is still made in Brazil. The book’s theme is the immanence. What seems to be a philosophical term of difficult apprehension points to a very intuitive meaning: that which defines things as they are. Thinkers of immanence, thus, is a title that gathers subjects of reflections that looks for the thing’s raison d’être, genesis and history in the nature of things in themselves.” João Leonardo Medeiros

AUTHOR

Maurício Vieira Martins is a sociologist, PhD in Philosophy, professor at the Institute for Humanities and Philosophy (ICHF) of the Universidade Federal Fluminense and member of the Interdisciplinary Center for Studies and Research on Marx and Marxism (NIEP-Marx). He researches intentionally at the intersection of Philosophy and Social Sciences – and has several papers published in both areas – for understanding that the current split of the objects of investigation produced more dangers than benefits to knowledge. He is particularly interested on the possibility of refreshing and renewing Marxism in the contemporary World, thus the effort to make it dialogue with other forms of knowledge.

ONTOLOGY AND AESTHETICS | NIEP-Marx Collection, Volume II
ONTOLOGIA E ESTÉTICA | Coleção NIEP-Marx, Volume II

Editors: Flávio Ferreira Miranda and Rodrigo Delpupo Monfardini

SYNOPSIS

After the crisis of capitalist societies iniciated in 2008, the work of Marx has once again conquered a wide audience, being recognised as a powerful tool to the comprehension of  capital’s expansive and destructive dynamics. These are good news. But Marx and Marxism ha much more to say about other dimensions of social life. For instance, it discusses the specificity of human being, a discussion that evokes the plan of ontology. The articles gathered in this second volume of Niep-Marx’s collection deal with questions on aesthetics and ontology and the relation between them. It tries to show the readers some of the less debated, but more significant facets of the totalizing perspective to the understanding of the social  world presented by Marx.

TRABALHO, ESTRANHAMENTO E EMANCIPAÇÃO | Coleção NIEP-Marx, Volume I

Editor: Renake Bertholdo David Neves

SYNOPSIS

The texts collected in this volume deal with diverse questions and perspectives on the worlds of labour, departing from a common conception: the Maxist framework of interpretation of human societies. The division of societies in classes, estrangement (alienation), the revolutionary subject, the price of the food we eat and of the loans we take… All these themes and many others are dealt with in the articles, and are directed related to the question of labour, which indelibly shapes the history of human societies, in the past and today.
